The homeowners of this fresh and simple kitchen desired two things: 1) a design that was reminiscent of their travels to quaint towns throughout Denmark and Sweden, and 2) a kitchen that hardly looked like a kitchen at all. In order to achieve this we used clever techniques to hide the kitchen’s eyesores like bulky stainless steel appliance fronts and unsightly countertop gadgets nearly completely. The marble backsplashes slide to the side to reveal niches for everyday kitchen items which are easily stowed once used. The double ovens are hidden behind pocket doors, while the dishwasher, fridge, and freezer all have custom panels to mimic cabinetry. Even the hood that sits over a streamlined induction cooktop is cleverly masked to look like upper cabinets. These uppers were inspired by Swedish flat sawn balusters that are typically seen as porch railings—the clients love the subtle texture they bring! And due to massive amount of storage space provided by the floor to ceiling cabinetry on the far wall, we elected to swap the typical island for a lighter feeling dining table. This cozy eat in kitchen with adjoining morning coffee nook is the embodiment of easy Scandinavian design.
